2016 Second Princess, Kristen Phung

Kristen Phung was born and raised in Monterey Park. As an individual who always seeks new adventures, challenges and continuous self-improvement, she has completed several trainings and competitions to achieve a rank of Petty Officer Third Class in the United States Naval Sea Cadet Corps. Kristen graduated from the University of California, Riverside with two degrees, earning a B.S. in Business Administration with a concentration in Accounting and a B.A. in Media and Cultural Studies with a concentration in Ethnography, Documentary and Visual Culture. During her studies, she was an IRS certified volunteer for the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program and a member of the Accounting Society. She also worked on various film projects, such as a documentary called “A New Way of Life” and a short film called “No Good Deed Goes Unpunished”.
Having been to over 20 different countries, Kristen hopes to continue traveling and experience the different cultures that the world has to offer. One of her passions in life is to help reduce the number of the millions of children who do not receive a proper education today. For many years, Kristen began to pursue this by tutoring numerous children in her community and helping them achieve their academic goals. She is excited for the opportunity to become an ambassador for the Chinese American community and hopes that her fluency in Cantonese and Mandarin will help connect her to the people of the community. Kristen hopes that her continual contributions in helping children and her involvement with the community will one day inspire many others to do the same.
